Indigo Dreams Takes on Bullies
By Lori Lite
“Her stomach ached, she sobbed deeply and she could not fall to sleep. I
realized that she needed to get the hurtful words out of her body and mind.”
My young daughter arrived home from school crying as she explained that her feelings
were intentionally hurt by one of her peers. As the day progressed, she became
increasingly sad and sick. At bedtime her stomach ached, she sobbed deeply and she
could not fall to sleep. I realized that she needed to get the hurtful words out of
her body and mind. We took a few deep belly breaths and imagined that she was blowing
bubbles. We had fun playing with the bubble in our hands. Then we took the hurtful
words and put them into our bubble. We sent it way up high until it popped. My
daughter smiled with her eyes closed and fell fast asleep. I kissed her forehead and
headed for my computer. I pulled out a story called The Perfect Club; a story
I had begun writing 10 years prior for my oldest daughter. Now I knew so much more
about stress, anxiety, anger and energy. I added coping strategies for each of the
characters in this heartwarming story of acceptance and “Indigo
Dreams: Garden of Wellness” was born.
If you think your child is safe because he is not the class nerd and he can bounce a
ball, think again. Many of the children being selected as victims are good looking,
athletic, smart, caring and creative. Teachers are shocked when they hear this
particular child is being bullied.
So, how can you help your child be bully proof?
The best line of defense starts at home. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you bully yourself, beating yourself up for mistakes you make?
- Do you unknowingly bully your children, over-criticizing them and correcting
everything they do?
- Are you bullied by your spouse, treating each other disrespectfully?
- Do you accept bullying from your friends and allow relationship with unequal
energy exchange?
- Do you forget to stand up for yourself?
- Do you ignore sibling rivalry that involves hitting, taunting and teasing?
- Do you model any bullying behavior to your children, perhaps making plans to
exclude others?
If you have answered yes to the above questions be aware that this can make your
child vulnerable to an attack by a bully. The child with bullying capabilities will
be drawn to the child that endures or witnesses the above behaviors.
Luckily, there are ways to counteract or reverse this process. As the author of the
Indigo Dreams Series of children’s meditation/relaxation books and CDs, I have
introduced my children to numerous self-empowering techniques that include
affirmations, belly breathing and visualizations. As the issues of bullying surfaced
for my own children I introduced additional wellness techniques that can benefit any
child.
“Indigo Dreams: Garden of Wellness” can help
your children to feel better while getting their power back and putting them in a
place of strength to protect themselves from bullies.
It is our hope that our stories and techniques empower your children to live a life
of wellness!
